So you’ve just purchased a new computer? Congrats!
Wait – why is it running so slow?…This thing was supposed to be one of the fastest machines out there!
The answer is pretty simple: Bloatware.
What is bloatware?
Bloatware is software that runs on your computer – straight out of the box, that the manufacturer has installed that usually provides many unnecessary features that are not used by the end user, or just generally use more system resources than necessary, while offering little or no benefit to its users. Basically, it’s software that has been pre-installed on your machine that you don’t need and most likely don’t want and is slowing your machine down.
Why is it on my machine?
There are more than a few reasons for this. Some of these are:
- Your PC manufacturer has received payment from a company in order to let that company preload its software on your computer prior to you purchasing it. This allows the PC manufacturer to subsidize the cost of the PC and give you a some form of discount or free item.
- Sometimes, programs are simply written poorly or seem to take over computers and make them run slower because of “added features”. (iTunes…are you listening? Adobe Reader…)
- Sometimes bloatware is installed when a user installs software with “recommended”, “default”, or “express” settings. Most software will give the user an option of not installing things like toolbars, etc if “custom installation” is chosen.
